In a time of mourning, the thought of eating is the furthest thing from anyone's mind. When experiencing intense sadness, it is common to reduce food intake or skip meals. We recommend comfort foods because emotional and physical stress can impair recovery from loss. Blair Mazzarella Funeral Home believes that nourishing, comforting foods can aid in the recovery of grieving loved ones and give them the strength to cope with the emotional and physical demands of this challenging time.

We recommend making or bringing food to the grieving family as one of the things to do. No matter the event, good food is the glue that holds everyone together. All celebrations, whether anniversaries, milestone birthdays, christenings, or matriculations, include a meal.

Comfort Foods For The Grieving

In times of sadness, it can be comforting to have something to eat. Sometimes those experiencing loss are so exhausted that they neglect essential self-care, such as eating right. One of the most helpful things you can do for a grieving family is to bring them a healthy, hearty meal. The most soothing dishes include the following:

1. Fresh Fruits And Vegetables

It's natural to want to offer a friend who is going through a difficult time some fried chicken or fatty burgers, but these dishes aren't always the most comforting foods. After losing a loved one, most people find it difficult to eat even light meals. Grieving people would benefit significantly from a healthy, energy-boosting fruit or vegetable salad meal. These foods' high nutrient and fibre content also make them great for digestive health.

2. Soup And Stews

It's no surprise that soups and stews have been around for centuries: they're delicious and soothing. These dishes are gentle enough to eat under pressure but still warm and comforting. They don't require much effort to store and reheat, making them convenient when you don't feel like cooking. To ensure that a loved one has food for several days, you can make a large batch of their preferred soup.

3. Bread And Baked Goods Are Comfort Foods

Bakery items like muffins, cookies, and brownies are comforting options for a grieving family with young children. It's simple to whip up a sandwich when you're starving or pair a muffin with your morning coffee. Give your friend some spreads like butter, cheese, and jam to go with their baked goods.
