Mom’s courageous spirit, her tenacity, her deep love for her family. I will forever miss her, her cooking, her laugh. She was my teacher when I became a mother for the first time. I owe her everything I am.
Forever in my heart, rest in peace querida Mami. ❤️

Q: What will you never forget about Ana?
A: Her beautiful loving personality and incredible cooking! I remember back in the 70s when I would visit her apartment with Diana and there was always an amazing smell of Puerto Rican food throughout the house. She was always smiling, happy and loved to have her family around her. God Bless you.

Ma, I never thought this day would come because you were the strongest woman I have ever known and I believed you had many more years ahead of you. Inevitably, I knew it would come, and have never been prepared for it. I also always thought I was going to get that call or email from Mami while I was deployed, training, or very far away. But I thanked God I never did. You were 93 and still sang to us, made funny faces with me, and still adored your grandchildren and great grandchildren. Well, the time has come to say goodbye to your physical being, but you will never die in my mind, heart, and soul. Ma, you are the best grandmother any grandson could ever ask for. We call you Ma because you were your Javielito and Papito's second mother, and I appreciate everything you did our whole lives. Words cannot describe the love I have for you and how I am feeling right now. You taught us how to play parchisi and dominos. You sang to us and with us. You taught me God came first and to always trust Him. That helped me a lot while I was deployed, so thank you. You always asked if we were hungry and made my hot cocoa in the middle of the night if I asked for it. You made sure Javielito and I had gifts underneath the Christmas tree and a village to be amazed by. You taught me your pernil and turkey recipe. You taught us many things about our Puerto Rican culture through foods, celebrations, customs, and language. I miss being young and sleeping on your bed beside you, holding your hand, knowing my Ma was right next to me. As an adult, you were right there supporting me, my family, and my accomplishments. You went to my Army Basic Training graduation, officer commissioning ceremony, promotion to Captain, and even visited us in Texas to meet our newborn baby girl. You loved Tania and Liz like your own granddaughters and that meant everything to Javielito and me. I am so happy that our children had the opportunity to meet, communicate, and love their bisabuela. I always dreamed of moving you out of New York City to live a more peaceful and quiet life, but you loved your city and never wanted to leave. But, I am happy knowing you were able to visit the places we have lived at and called home. I will cherish all these memories and many more that we built together. Like you always told me, I love you with all of my heart and soul. Tania, Anaya, Kayla, Enzo and I love you so much and will miss hearing your sweet and beautiful voice. I will see you on the other side. Bendicion Ma. Te quiero siempre.

Querida Mami,
Tu hija mayor
Diana
