Obituary of Milton Chowfatt
Please share a memory of Milton to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Milton Loreto Chowfatt was born on December 10th, 1952 at 67 Quarry Street, East Dry River, to Henry Chowfatt and Madeline LeeYow in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. He attended St. Margaret’s Anglican Primary School in Belmont and later passed his Common Entrance Exam for South East Port of Spain (SEPOS) Secondary School where he graduated in 1968. From there he went on to attend Polytechnic Institute 6th Form where he did his advanced O’ levels and left in 1972.
Milton and family moved from Quarry Street to 29 Carr Street, Belmont in 1967. There, Milton formed long lasting friendships and gained popularity among the fellas and girls alike, too numerous to name, but they know who they are.
He immigrated with his sister Lynette, to Brooklyn, NY in 1973 where he furthered his education at Kingsborough Community College and graduated Mu Alpha Theta in 1975. Soon after, he joined the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class in 1976 and was honorably discharged in 1979. Upon his return back to civilian life, he continued his pursuit of education by attending California State Polytechnic University, Pomona graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1981. In the same year, he got married to his then girlfriend, Glen Harangee. Together, they had one son, Christian Chowfatt.
Over the years Milton held several jobs, his last being a Mortgage Analyst with JP Morgan Chase from which he retired in 2013. He was an avid lover and follower of football (soccer), many times returning home with a sprained ankle. Milton also had a passion for ping pong (table tennis) and chess, both of which he continued to play until his vision deteriorated. Music was also one of his favorite pastimes, especially steel pan (which he tried to play) and jazz. But, if you know Milton, Ganja was also a favorite passion! He loved it!
Milton also had an amazing sense of humor. To many, he was the funniest person they knew. Quick-witted, Milton always had a good comeback! For hours he would have you bent over laughing out loud. Although he often didn’t have patience for stupidness, he was extremely kind and generous to his family and friends.
In his last years, Milton became isolated and depressed, mostly due to his poor vision and lack of hearing. With encouragement he became more outgoing. He began travelling by bus and was becoming more independent in his activities of daily living. He was looking forward to his cochlear implant surgery, which was going to give him a second chance at hearing and improved quality of life. Sadly, that was not meant to be. Milton transitioned on March 20th, 2025 at his home in Staten Island. He leaves to mourn his son Christian, former wife Glen, his sisters Myrna, Fiona (Pinky) and Lynette, a host of nieces and nephews, in-laws and amazing friends!
